DEATH and MOZART
The composer's last year in words and music
Medici Choir
Brandenburg Sinfonia
Conductor David Gostick
Soloist Luci Briginshaw
At the beginning of 1791 Mozart’s creative energy is undimmed and he is manically composing – debts are mounting and his wife’s medical bills need to be paid. So when Death turns up to claim him, it’s no surprise that Mozart is too busy. A temporary reprieve only gives him more time to compose. And these new works seem to hint that he’d quite like to be the exception to the universal rule… Death, however, has other ideas.
This wrangling dialogue between Death and Mozart, freely adapting Mozart’s own letters, is interwoven with the exquisite choral music of what turns out to be Mozart’s last year: The Magic Flute, Clemenza di Tito and his uncompleted Requiem.
